Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral from a family doctor?

No you do not. You can inquire about services without a referral.

Are services covered through OHIP?

Unfortunately they are not. They are sometimes covered through extended health benefits. If you have health benefits, it is encouraged to call to ask about coverage. You may want to specifically ask how much is covered and how much per session is covered since there is great variability across providers.

Will you direct bill to my insurance company?

At this time, direct billing is not available. Payments are possible either via e-transfer, cash, or cheque.

How can I set up an appointment?

Please either complete the contact form or send an email to ashley.paterson@patersonpsychology.com. Dr. Paterson will then be in touch. A brief intake interview will help determine if Dr. Paterson is a good fit to meet your needs.

What is a clinical psychologist and how are they different from other providers?

A clinical psychologist in Ontario typically completes a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from an accredited university. In their training, they learn the theoretical underpinnings of human behaviour, mental health disorders, assessment, and treatment. They are taught how to conduct and interpret quality research to ensure that when supporting clients, they are drawing from evidence-based practices. Simultaneously throughout their training, they learn about various therapeutic modalities and complete placements under supervision within mental health facilities. Their training prepares them to assess and diagnose mental health and neurodevelopmetal conditions through clinical interviews and comprehensive assessments, provide therapy, and conduct research. The communication of a psychological diagnosis is a controlled act restricted to qualified members of the College of Psychologists of Ontario. Psychologists are registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario.  Psychologists do not prescribe medication in Ontario.

Psychiatrists are mental health professionals who complete a medical degree and then specialize in psychiatry. They complete assessments using clinical interviews and questionnaires and diagnose mental health and neurodevelopmental disorders, including anxiety, depression, and ADHD. They also prescribe medication to help manage the symptoms of these disorders.  They are registered with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

Social workers are mental health professionals who work with individuals, families, groups and communities to improve individual and collective well-being. They respond to social issues like racism, poverty, and unemployment. As well, social workers advocate for social justice, human rights, and fair access to health and social services. There is significant variability in their training, but many complete masters degrees and seek placements that help train them to become therapists. They are registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.

Psychotherapists are mental health professionals who typically complete a masters degree in psychotherapy. Their training focusses largely on the provision of psychotherapy. They are registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario.
